Allergy Symptoms

Many individuals suffer from allergies which are due to many occurrences, from environmental problems like pollution to conditions which are recognizable some time after birth. Some allergies in fact, can even develop before the baby is born. Some allergies develop later on in life and it is possible that allergy symptoms occur also in adulthood.

Substances that cause allergies are called allergens.  Allergens are usually harmless substances, yet the body over reacts to them by exposing allergy symptoms. The reactions of the body’s immune system are a bid to protect the body itself.  However doctors consider this reaction as an exaggerated one, since on non allergic people the substances do not cause any harm at all.

Common allergic reactions occur when an individual comes in contact with dust, animals, some insects, smoking, pollen, and even foods. In an individual, allergy symptoms to household animals for example, may take form of itchy eyes or sneezing.  In another individual, allergy symptoms may be that of coughing or wheezing. The allergy symptoms show up when the body produces excessive antibodies to react to something it considers as dangerous.  It often happens that in the same house a person is allergic to the pet living with the family, whilst other members do not show any symptoms at all.

The tendency to develop an allergy is usually hereditary, however there are individuals that don’t have any allergy symptoms.  Also, an individual doesn’t have to develop the same allergy as the parents.

Some allergies are associated with specific times of the year and are seasonal.  An example of a very common seasonal allergy is hay fever.   Hay fever allergy symptoms are very often associated with the nose, since hay fever is a nasal allergy. Some of the symptoms caused by hay fever are itchy or runny nose, itchy ears or throat, frequent sneezing.

Apart from the sensitivity of the nose, the lungs, the skin, and the eyes are other body parts on which allergy symptoms manifest often.  In many occasions, asthma is an allergic condition that hinders proper breathing.  It is an allergy which causes an inflammation within the air passages and allergy symptoms are coughing and wheezing. There are instances where asthma is not caused by allergy.

The skin also reacts to allergens.  Dry skin, itchiness, rashes are symptoms both in children and in adults and could have been caused by food or by medicines.

Allergy is a disorder of the immune system often also referred to as atopy. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees.[1]

Mild allergies like hay fever are highly prevalent in the human population and cause symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis, itchiness, and runny nose. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions and potentially death.

A variety of tests now exist to diagnose allergic conditions; these include testing the skin for responses to known allergens or analyzing the blood for the presence and levels of allergen-specific IgE. Treatments for allergies include allergen avoidance, use of anti-histamines, steroids or other oral medications, immunotherapy to desensitize the response to allergen, and targeted therapy.
